For those of us with small children, Lois Ehlert may just be the greatest thing that has happened to story time. Lois is the award winning author + illustrator of Color Zoo, which was was awarded a Caldecott Honor as a distinguished American picture book for children in 1991. Other children’s books you might recognize by Ehlert are Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (my son’s favorite), Planting a Rainbow, Eating the Alphabet, Feathers for Lunch… and the list only becomes longer and more colorful ;)
I tagged along with Donele again from the Milwaukee Art Museum this time to visit one of the most beautifully curated homes I’ve ever been inside. We took the elevator up a few levels only to be greeted by Lois dressed in the most colorful outfit; a perfect pick-me-up on another cold, dreary Wisconsin Winter day. We had been told prior to this that we were in for quite a treat. As we walked down the dimly lit hallway of this historic Milwaukee building, Lois opened her door. And as we were greeted with the aroma of fresh blooms, that phrase “quite a treat” became a huge understatement. Her home, as you will see, is filled with historic treasures from all around the world. It is filled with gorgeous artwork that continues to inspire her on a daily basis. It is filled with everything she holds close to her heart.
Lois is a big deal. So to say that I was a little bit intimidated to be in her presence wouldn’t be far from the truth. That feeling of intimidation left me however as soon as she welcomed us into her home. She is intelligent, well spoken, patient and compassionate. She speaks with an incredible amount of passion for her family, her life as an artist, the city of Milwaukee, her art collection and the children – both young and old – who are so in love with her books… It would be impossible to walk away from her without feeling completely inspired. Be sure to read Lois’ interview with Donele here! Such an amazing woman… You don’t want to miss it.
